Smithville Missouri Raw Water Pump Station

Project: Raw Water Pump Station
Owner: City of Smithville
Location: Smithville, Missouri
Engineer: HDR, Inc.
Contract Amount: $2,983,795
Scheduled Completion Date: March 15, 2023
Superintendent: Brad Zahner

This project replaces the existing Smithville raw water pump station. The controlling butterfly valve and reducer at the base of the Smithville Reservoir dam are also being replaced. This infrastructure controls the flow of water from Smithville Lake to the pump station and provides a mechanism for Zebra mussel control at the raw water intake facility by using a copper ion system.

In recent years the raw water pump station had flooded, damaging electrical equipment. The pump station was also reaching its rated capacity. This project will locate the new station at a higher elevation above the flood plain. It has room for three pumps, two pumps now and one in the future. The station will have a separate electrical control room and a chemical feed equipment room.

The current raw water pump station is designed to send 2.5 million gallons of Smithville Lake water to the plant in a twenty-four-hour period. Based on the predicted population growth, the city plans to design and construct a 5 million gallon a day plant with completion in 2025. The raw water pimp station project is the first step in this process.

The new butterfly valve at the toe of the dam will have a bypass so future maintenance will be more accessible. Zebra mussels have been identified as a major issue. The mussels attach themselves to water intakes, which can lead to clogs. To prevent them, an ion exchange system will treat the raw water and control the mussels.

Water Treatment Plant (mechanical subcontract)

Project: Water Treatment Plant (mechanical subcontract)
Owner: City of Lexington
Location: Lexington, Missouri
General Contractor: Radmacher Brothers Excavating Company, Inc.
Engineer: Bartlett & West, Inc.

This project consists of constructing a new 1.2 million gallon per day water plant, along with a new well field, under a separate contract. This plant will provide quality water for the next generation to Lexington and allow the city to increase water sales to the surrounding area, if needed. The project will also convert the city’s water system from one using surface or river water, to one using ground well water.

The project involves building the new water treatment plant, including two lime sludge lagoons, a recarbonation basin, installation of three steel package gravity filters, chemical feed and storage equipment, two solids contact units, one aerator, chlorine detention piping, process piping, and installation of the following equipment: carbon dioxide storage and feed panel, lime silo and feeder, steel gravity filters, supervisory controls and data acquisition (SCADA) equipment, electrical switchgear, and two generators. The project also includes plant electrical, mechanical, and plumbing along with grading, seeding, and crushed rock and concrete paving around the plant.

This project involved constructing a completely new water treatment plant on a 41-acre site located southwest of Rockport, Missouri, along the east side of Interstate Highway 29. The design provided for an average flow of 1,910 gallons per minute (2.75 million gpd) and a peak flow of 2,387 gallons per minute (3.44 million gpd). The major structures for the treatment process include an aerator, flow splitter, solids contact basin, two recarbonation basins and four gravity filters in a precast concrete treatment building, CT basin, clearwell, and a high-service pump station. The contract included treatment equipment, yard and process piping, instrumentation, and electrical work.

The project was delivered on schedule with minimal change orders. Under an agreement with Alliance Water Resources, the commission distributes water to its wholesale customers, including the cities of Fairfax, Rock Port, and Tarkio, as well as Public Water Supply District #1.

This project was an extensive renovation of the city’s existing aquatic complex located in Rotary Park that had been built in 2000 by Irvinbilt Company. That complex included an indoor pool, outdoor pool, and bath house.

Improvements to the existing indoor facility included renovation of an existing six-lane by 25-yard lap pool to provide a shallow play area and current channel with four 25-yard lap lanes. The existing 6,600 square foot indoor pool enclosure was renovated with new translucent daylighting panels to improve building performance and expanded to allow for additional indoor deck seating.

The existing outdoor leisure and lap pool was heavily modified to include six 25-yard lap lanes, a zero-depth entry with new play features, a lazy river and a family slide. Other new amenities include a dual flume slide tower with deck run-outs, deck sprays, night swim lighting, shade structures and birthday party rental areas on deck.

A new 7,600 SF bathhouse provides consolidated pool mechanical space, administrative offices for the facility and parks staff, party and meeting rooms, concessions, and changing rooms for men, women, and families. Changing facilities includes adult changing tables for companion care and considered the active aging population that utilizes the indoor lap lanes throughout the year. Concessions sales windows are configured to allow flexibility when the outdoor pool is closed. Staffing needs were considered by collocating concessions, admissions, and guards’ spaces to allow for multi-tasking during non-peak periods of the day. While the bathhouse facilities are primarily new, portions of existing walls and foundations were modified for the pool mechanical space and covered with new exterior materials to provide a fresh and seamless appearance.

Customer Testimonials

My company and I have worked with Irvinbilt Constructors and its predecessor, Irvinbilt Company, on many projects in the last thirty years that include small pump stations to multi-million-dollar water treatment plants and wastewater treatment facilities. We have worked with Irvinbilt on design-bid-build projects as well as design-build. It is obvious that Irvinbilt and their employees are always concerned about craftsmanship and work efficiency.
